FRANK SEMAKASome might scoff at the fuss made for Mr. Semaka, after all he is just a vice-principal. Not True! So much isowed by so many to this man. His life work as an educator exceeded the normal bounds of a teacher. He has advisedus when we've been confused, encouraged us when we were in doubt, taught us when we did not know and punished uswhen we should have known better. His accomplishments and recognitions have been many and although his years asan educator runs into higher math his presence will be sorely missed. It is for these reasons and for numerous others thatthe students of Myers dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Frank Semaka, a scholar among scholars.Dennis Kunimoto - Class PresidentThere are mixed feelings I'm sure, at the close of this school year as we contemplate the retirement of our Mr.Semaka. The name of Frank Semaka has become synonymous with education in the high school in Taber. Wheneveryou think of the high school here, you naturally think of Mr. Semaka. At this time of year, I pay tribute to Mr. Semakawho has given the best years of his life to the youth of our community. He has given of himself freely wherever there wasa need. He has over the years been an example to all of us exemplifying the qualities for which he stood; such things ashonesty, integrity, devotion to duty and responsibility. Students could "count on him", teachers and administrators couldrely on him, the school board and the public could always expect to receive a full measure of service from him. Anyonewho became acquainted with him were better off for just having known him.It has been a privilege to have been acquainted with Frank Semaka for some twenty and plus years and to have workedand associated very closely with him for the past ten. In my association with him, I have found him to be co-operative,loyal, good-hearted and a true friend. In the years to come, I wish you, Frank Semaka, the best; for you and yours. Even though you are leaving the professionand our place of employment I hope I have many more opportunities to associate with you.Rell G. FrancisVice-PrincipalI would like to commend the yearbook committee for their decision to dedicate thisedition of the "Myers Dawn" to Mr. Semaka. Such recognition is well deserved.Over the past eight years, I have worked very closely with Mr. Semaka and haveappreciated his many fine qualities. The two characteristics that to me are most outstandingare his dependability and his dedication to education. Students and teachersalike could always count on Mr. Semaka to have his work done on time and to have itwell done. His concern for individual students was manifested in the many hours ofearnest conversation and counselling with literally thousands of students during his morethan thirty years of service.Mr. Semaka's exemplar conduct is a model that many students would do well toemulate.James L. GeorgeSuperintendentPRINCIPAL’S MESSAGEI would like to express my appreciation to all the staff and students for their assistance in various ways during my firstyear at W. R. Myers. The co-operation and support experienced has been very commendable.Generally, I think the relationship between staff and students has been quite satisfactory, considering that occasionalconflicts of interest and irritations occur. Students' Councils (and their committees) have been most helpful in furtherdeveloping a favorable atmosphere for learning. Their interest and co-operation is continually required for the school tofunction effectively. The work of staff committees has resulted in some changes to the Jr. High modified program and Jr. and Sr. Highpromotions policies. We expect that these changes will have beneficial effects for the students concerned. A full-scalesemester system has been introduced in Sr. High, and continued on a limited basis in the Jr. High. We are expanding theWork Experience program and the Special Projects Credits. A W. R. Myers in Depth Study Guide has been published, andthe School handbook has been revised for the orientation and guidance of teachers and students.Special thanks to the Yearbook Committee and the publishers of the Jr. and Sr. Newspapers. It takes a great deal ofplanning, responsibility, and work to produce quality publications which will contribute positively to the stature of theschool, as well as provide an outlet for creative talents. These are tasks which are very time-consuming, and they maynot always appear to be appreciated; but they have a significant role in the total school program -- requiring support andactive participation. Our 1972 Graduation ceremony was a bright and colorful occasion. It included a farewell to our Mr. Semaka, teacherat W. R. Myers School for thirty years, (the last 12 years as Vice-principal), and a man who has left his mark in theminds and hearts of many students and teachers. We wish him every success in his retirement years. The Worth Commission Report suggests the possibility of many changes in Education. We will need to assess trends, recommendations, and innovations carefully in terms of educational objectives, in order to make appropriate decisions forthe ultimate benefit of our students. We must not forget that the school has a two-fold purpose: to serve the needs andinterests of the individual students, and to fulfill objectives of the larger society.Let us proceed into the 1972-'73 school year with courage and conviction. There are numerous jobs to be done well, whether it is in the teaching or the learning. May all of you set worthy goals, and make an earnest effort to achieve thosegoals.D. V. This was done as a summerproject. Councils put on a student exchange which was fairly good considering it was the first year. Council also wentto Lethbridge and Coaldale to visit the High Schools and gain some new ideas. Council also sponsored several HighSchool dances, and also saved the school from having all dances prohibited.KEYETTE CLUBThe Keyette Club is a service group. We had a membership of thirty-three girls. Our executive consisted ofPresidents: Cheryl Luehr, first half of year; and Mona Wilde, Secretary: Bronwyn Ellingson, Treasurer: Marilyn Winkler, and our Advisor: Mrs. Neilson. Some of the money raising activities we participated in this year were: bake sales, and the banquet for theKiwanis Club.We also provided various services for the community. At Christmas time we donated money to the Fire Departmentfor Christmas gifts for welfare children. Also at Christmas we worked along with the Key Club in assisting the SalvationArmy. We also aided with the Blood Donors Clinic. At school we helped and did most of the planning for the FortBenton Exchange.Mona WildeSponsor: ODDIES CENTRAL DRUG LIMITEDKEY CLUBnsorW H UJ Q 2 < Z « <0 H O CC LUMarion BatemanRod Gough Alan Tanaka Steve EvansonRon Higa Tom Oddie Darcy WillsKen McLaughlin Zoni Kover Shaun BoyleNorm Engwer Jerry Gow David LitchfieldBill Dick David Mereski Ken KerkhoffJay JohnsonDarrell BrownJames EnmanROCKETRY CLUBADVISOR: MR. Where were you working prior to coming to the University of Lethbridge?MR: I have a Master of Information Studies degree with a specialization in Library Science from the University of Toronto and mylibrary experience includes employment at the CBC in Toronto and Vancouver, Lethbridge College, Lethbridge Public Library, and, most recently, Lethbridge School Division.MM: Before coming to the University of Lethbridge, I worked for a year with the University of Athabasca as the primary onsite staffmember in the Library. I was in charge of all onsite duties, helping at the service desk and providing technical services.IN THIS ISSUEHistoricalnewspapers fromTaber, Coaldaleand Nanton addedto locally-digitizedcollections (p.3)New database:HeinOnline WaterRights & Resources(p.5)What happens toyour data when youfinish a project? I also haveresponsibilities with interlibraryloans, course reserves, studentassistants, and communityengagement.MM: My role here at theuniversity is Library OperationsSpecialist III. I spend most ofmy time helping on the GeneralServices Desk, supportingstudents, faculty members andcommunity members with theirquestions, solving any issuesthat may arise and providingreference services. My other timeis split between helping withcopyright permission, answeringcopyright-related queries, andproviding technical services. How does your work with Access Services support faculty members at the University of Lethbridge?MR: I like to think the work I do helps faculty by providing them with the information and resources they require to do their jobseffectively. That might mean fulfilling an interlibrary loan for their own research needs, getting items on course reserve for theirstudents, making sure their account is up to date so they can access our services, or answering any question they may have. I try toprovide the best service I can to any of our patrons and if I can’t help them myself, I will try to find someone who can.MM: I believe my work at the Library is the same for faculty members and students; we are here to provide guidance, resourcesand information needs for our community’s academic staff, students, and administrators in their pursuit of academic and researchexcellence. One of my favourite sayings is that Library staff don’t know everything, but they have tools to find out about everything. What have you enjoyed about working at the Library so far?MR: The people. I have really enjoyed getting to know my co-workers as well as the students, faculty, staff, and community memberswho use (and appreciate!) the Library and its services on a regular basis.MM: I enjoy helping the University community with their questions, solving issues, providing reference service, and teaching them thetools and tips to find relevant information. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you?MR: As a fan of the Toronto Raptors, I look forward to them winning another championship someday!MM: I have moved a few times, and I’m new to the Lethbridge area and look forward to exploring the city and what it has to offer, alongwith the beautiful walking trails.New Access Services teammembers ... In total, more than 7,000 issuesof the Taber Free Press (1907-1910), Taber Times (1911-1971),Coaldale Flyer (1958-1959), Sunny South News (1959-1974) andNanton News (1903-1971) are now freely accessible online to thepublic via the Library’s Southern Alberta Newspapers collection. It is anticipated that these materials will be of special interest tohistorians, genealogists and others fascinated by local history. This project was initiated by Rhys Stevens and Jake Cameron ofthe Library’s Digitization Team in November 2021 and involvedworking extensively with Backstage Library Works to digitizenearly 50,000 individual pages of newsprint from microfilm.Microfilm reels were sourced from both the Legislature Library inEdmonton and within the Library’s own collections, and sent toBackstage for scanning and image processing. Processed imageswere then uploaded to the Library’s own CONTENTdm digitallibrary software where they are now searchable and viewableonline.Special thanks to the University Library for funding the projectand both the Alberta Legislature Library and the AlbertaNewspaper Group for providing materials and permissions insupport of the project.Historical newspapers fromTaber, Coaldale and Nantonadded to locally-digitizedcollectionsAdvertisem*nt, Nanton News (1921, March 31, p. 4)Library Lore | Fall 2022 / Issue 10 4What happens to your data when you finish a project?Source: Ayers, Scott, Stevens. (2019). Report on the University of Lethbridge Research Data Management Survey, October 2018. https://hdl.handle.net/10133/5582In the Library’s 2018 survey on research data management practices at the University, roughly half of the respondents indicated thatthey had no set retention date for their data! They opted to keep all forms of data, raw or processed, until they became inaccessible orlost.Preservation of digital information is widely considered to require more constant and ongoing attention than preservation of othermedia. Depositing data resources with a trusted digital archive can ensure that they are curated and handled according to goodpractices in digital preservation. Where can you find more information about trusted repositories? The Library’s best practices guide is agreat place to start.Another important step for research data management is creating a data management plan at the beginning of your research. This canhelp address some of the questions around retention early on in your process. It also allows your team to explore what options areavailable to preserve the data for long-term access. Access can be an important consideration, depending on the requirements of yourfunding agency or your publisher. To help you create a data management plan, try the DMP Assistant, an excellent free resource. It can help you or your teamaddress questions regarding data collection, documentation and metadata, storage and backup, preservation, sharing and reuse, responsibilities, and ethics and legal compliance. Remember, a DMP is a living document – meaning you can revisit it and makealterations as things change.More questions about data management? KilbackEach school year brings new challenges to students andstaff, requiring fresh approaches to old problems, and arevised perspective on essential goals. We have struggled this year with development of courseobjectives and evaluation plans, with more weighty finalexams, and a different budgetting system. The School Boardis holding regular meetings in the various schools, thusenabling members to become more familiar with daily operations. The cafeteria committee, under sponsorship of the seniorstudents council, is continuing to provide an effective andsatisfying service to the students and staff. We are anticipatinga substantial upgrading of the cafeteria facilities to furtherimprove this function. Our extra-curricular scene has been very exciting andimpressive this year, with outstanding accomplishment insports, the fine arts and other activities. We appreciate allthe students, teachers and other persons who have assistedwith coaching and supervising various events during the year. Our instructional program, with its breadth of academic andvocational-type courses, need periodic assessment in terms ofvalue to students and congruence with school and communityobjectives.Again, thanks to our Yearbook Committee and their advisor,Mr. Hart, for another quality production.^^•■■■•■■■^■■■■■■■••HMrtMMMMHMIHM^_ __^____i___-_^_i—_—67Science: L. to R: Del Cleland, Rex Anderson, Dale Lusk, Dick Robinson, and Ken Lawson.French: Ron MurphyMusic: Malcolm Edwards, and Milt Iverson.68English: L. to R: Laurie Chomany, Marlin Anderson, Valerie Kurio, Sharon Jones, Dora Brown, RubyHill, and Charles Hart.Social Studies: L. to R: Ron Murphy, Laurie Chomany, Eldon Litchfield, Don Ferguson, CharlesWallace, Eric Johnson, and Rell Francis.OBHBMaB ^iikbwh>>HnBiffiHUtmMiSMMiiami««iiHinBnn»raomMKaKHflmmHiiHMammac^^ iawa«mwMHmmTO«69Phys. The group wasdivided into approximatelyfour equal teams. Theawesome team 4, led byMr. Koski, were thefastest at passing thebucket from the ballparkto the hilltop. Therefore, they were also the first tofill their 5 gallon bucketand win the event. The next event, the lograce, saw teams 4 and 2tie. The team had tocarry their log from theballpark, through thecamp area, and thenacross the river. The four teams hada contest in which team #3emerged victorious. To end it all,the school split into two teams forthe last tug-off of the day. Studentsand teachers got in and found out how much fun pep rallies can be. Contests, plays and presentations have all been part of making our pep rallies thegreatest. One of the memorable pep rallies was the one at the beginning of our 1982school year. During this, the grade 12 victoriously won the pyramid contestand the grade 11 won the rowdy flag award. The P.E. 20-30 class also performedtheir aerobics for us.The Christmas assembly was just as fun. Presentations were made toteachers by none other than Santa Claus. This pep rally ended with the wholestudent body joining in and singing Christmas carols.Student pep rallies this year have really been a success and have shownthat W. R. The diplomas we will receiveattest to the proficiency and application during our high schoolyears. With the support of those people gathered here this evening,we have attained the credentials to go on to meet the new challengeswhich lie ahead of us.Yet this evening is not without a touch of sadness. This is the lastopportunity we shall have to meet as students and it may well be thelast occasion at which all of will be present.Because this may be our final meeting together, it might be wellto look over the road we have just travelled.Three years ago we entered high school perhaps with a trace ofhesistance and uncertainty about our immediate outlook asstudents. Gradually we put to rest those uncertainties and went onto acquire the education and training that we had sought.Another group of benefits, not so easily measured were also acquiredalong the way. I refer to such things as the ability to getalong with one another. To understand better the word “sportsmanship”.To have clearer the appreciation of the rewards which resultfrom perserverance and application. Those of us who, perhaps a bit skeptically entered this schoolthree years ago, have learned today that there is a reward for effort, and that only real effort produces a genuine reward.Success and achievement is seldom the product of just one’s ownefforts. Therefore our thoughts turn to those people who contributedthe most to our individual successes. I refer of course to our teachersand parents who often had to scold, conjole, console, and through itall lend guidance and support. Perhaps our expressions of gratitudecan best be manifested in the coming years by whatever accomplishmentsthat may become ours.Soon it will be time to pursue new goals. We will face them withoptimism, with courage, with determination. Each one of us will soon begin a journey alone toward a chosentask in life. The journey may not always be without its difficultiesand temporary setbacks, however, I am confident the virtues andprinciples which have been bestowed upon us in the past will serveas well in the future.Shortly the vacant places we leave behind tonight will be filled byothers, just as eager, just as anxious, just as determined to succeed. It is our sincere wish that all the pleasant and valuable experienceswhich have been ours, will in due course be theirs. When their turn comes may they be as sorry to leave as we arethis evening.Sponsored by:EVANSON FARMS (1975) LTDSponsored by:MILLIKEN FARM SUPPLIES26Class BrainsRoxanne Kurio and Mark BrewinClass ClownBest PersonalityCathy Evanson and Rod SassaSharon Hamilton and Art HashizumasKIRK’S TIRE LTD.27Most Likely to SucceedBest All AroundCathy Evanson and George ShimbashiJudy Miyashiro and Mark BrewinBest AthleteSharon Hamilton and Neil PowellJOHNSON’S DRUG STORE28Class LeaderBrad Litchfield and Amy ShimbashiMost FriendlyBest LookingLori Popilchak and Jim HendriksGeorge Shimboshi and Bonnie IkedaTABER IGA29As Far As My Eyes Can See...TRIWELL OILFIELD CONSTRUCTIONLTD.Box 880 Phone: 223-3292Taber, Alberta30SOMEWHERE IN THEMIST OF TIME, WHENTHEY ASKED ME IF IKNEW YOU, TD SMILEAND SA Y YOU WERE AFRIEND OF MINEDOUG’S HAIR HUTPERDUE MOTORS LTD.31Just Yesterday.32Bonnie IkedaMyrna OstercampJohn StrugariBarbara EdwardsLinda Fekete331. “Mommy look what I found, can we keep her?” squealed NancyHoogerdijk.2. This might well be termed the year of Com-prehensivesand Computers. On the one hand we areconfronted with a set of external exams andsignificantly higher requirements for obtaining a highschool diploma. The greatest impact will be felt by thelower-achieving students who may have to acceptsome alternative other than the previously anticipateddiploma. On the other hand, we see some excitingpossibilities for incorporating computer technology intoinstructional and administrative procedures.During this time of economic restraint, we are facedwith a need to carefully examine priorities in ourschool program and to select those activities which willprovide most educational benefit to our students. Thisassessment is reflected in decisions as to how budgetdollars are expended for supplies, equipment, and studenttravel.Special events have included the Day at the Park, the trip to Europe, and presentations by Rick’s Collegeand the Covenant Players. The Graduation Committeehas again worked diligently to prepare for animportant and colorful annual event. Our inter-school sports programs have once morebeen highly successful, thanks to the tremendous effortsof our students and their coaches and to substantialcommunity support. The fine arts programs inmusic, art, and drama are a very worthwhile complementto our academic core. A stage band for studentswith special interests, and scheduled in addition toregular band, has made exemplary contributions tothe school. In home economics, industrial arts, andbusiness education, our students have received practicalknowledge and skills applicable to direct job opportunitiesor in preparation for further training. The new Vandalism Reduction program has succeededthreefold — property damage has decreased, students are assuming greater responsibility for theirbehavior, and Students Council has benefited from themoney saved and contributed by the School Board.Under the direction of C. Hart, the students in oursmall Journalism class have included in their productionsa weekly column for the Taber Times, severaleditions of a school newspaper, and the Yearbookitself. We extend sincere thanks and appreciation tothis class for their outstanding quality work andperformance.— D. KilbackVEGASBILLIARDS AND ARCADEWeekdays 11 am — 11 pm Sunday 12 pm — 8 pm43R. Neil Powell was the only returningstarter; we had no returning setters; and onlynine people showed up at the beginning of theyear. Of this nine, one couldn’t handle the practicesand quit after the first week, and anotherwas forced to quit early in the season. This leftseven players, one more than absolutelynecessary, only 2 grade 12’s, 3 grade 1 l’s, and 2grade 10’s, one returning starter and no setterdid not look good.Dick Eto became an instant setter. Setting200 balls a day and having the same expected ofhim as we would an experienced setter gave noroom to be anything but good.Cam Shields started as a typical grade 11 —good skills but easy to psyche out — not mentallyexperienced. He caught heck every gamefor the first half of the season. At the end hecould probably take on anybody.Jody Slavik was a grade 10 player who wasshort. All he had was guts, good coordination, and tremendous strength. Jody got chewed outmore than anybody on the team, but he took it,learned and had a tremendous first year.Rob Layton was the surprise I needed. Grade10’s don’t normally play. The game is new tothem, and they don’t have the size, strength, and skill to compete. Rob was tall, strong, coordinatedand learned amazingly fast — the bestgrade 10 player I saw this year.Dave Anderson was a grade 11 player. Hestarted the year with one year of practice underhis belt and not one inch taller than grade 10.Nobody expected him to hit, but he could. Hewas a hustler with a good team attitude.Neil Powell was my only starter. I expected alot of Neil. When Neil was hot, we won. Whenhe was off, and that happens, we struggled.Neil’s big improvement was in attitude. He wasa team leader in practice and was positive to thegame all year.Dwight Harris started a year late — hisgrade

He washonored this school year by a special day dedicatedto him. This year also, he received the CentennialMedal in recognition of his dedication to theteaching profession. These honors, however, werelong overdue. All Myer's students have long recognizedhis great contribution to education and theirlives.Working through 25 graduations and hundredsof students is his greatest fame. But as well as thesethings, often most remembered are the small thingswhich show the feelings and energies that hispupils can acknowledge. What other teacher couldhandle detention duties for as long a duration withthe only complaint of the large number of studentswho perhaps sometimes fail to appear? Who elsecould liven up the lecture with an occasional story, oran explanation of poker or a sour joke? No studentwho has ever had the experience of being in any ofhis classes can ever forget his style, personality, andwit. The little recognition-little in the light of hisachievements and contributions-that Mr. Semakahas received-will always be foremost in hismemories. But may he always delight in thememories of his many students and have the satisfactionof knowing that, although we do not oftenshow it, we are truly grateful to him for thetremendous influence he has had on our lives. It iswith great sincerity that we say, "We're proud ofyou, Mr. Semaka. "Dawn ’68 StaffAcknowledgementsThe staff of Dawn '68 gratefullyacknowledges the assistance and supportof: Mr. Baldwin, our advisor, and the W.R. Also: Linda Wall, Co-Layout;Gwenne Halma, Sec. ; Valeen Jensen, Art.Editorial1This year's edition of The Dawn is unlike anyprevious one in content and concept. The Dawn'68 has been an experiment, a challenging, exciting and satisfying experiment. In an effort to present more "action" we havetried to dispense with as many as possible of thetraditional still group pictures and dull clubreports often borrowed from previous years. Intheir place, we have experimented with new, varied group poses, unique layout techniques, more interesting copy ( reports ) and newmaterials. We are aware that not all of our revolutionaryideas will be approved of. However, it is ourhope that those who are dissatisfied will supportthe next staff with their suggestions and assistance.Like any experiment, the Dawn '68 hasrequired an extraordinary amount of time andtedious effort. A common comment among ourstaff, none of whom had had any previous experiencewith the production of a yearbook, was, "I never realized there was so much workinvolved!" The yearbook is thus the efforts ofmany; my thanks are extended to all thoseresponsible. It is when we view the actual publishedproduct, instead of a paraphernalia of assortedpictures, bits of typing, dummy pages, andlayout mats, that our efforts become aworthwhile experience. Our experiment will be justified and deemedsuccessful if the Dawn '68 gives you much toreminisce of this school year.Linda Fong ( Editor )Taber DivisionSchool BoardSTANDING: M. Fulfillingtheir duties efficiently, they hold the respectof all. Thank you, Mr. George, Mr. Semaka, andMr. Francis for your devoted, untiring efforts and forthe interest shown in each one of us . . . you havetruly added much to our memories of high school!Congratulations to Linda Fong and her committeefor the long hours of work and planning that haveresulted in this fine edition of '68 Dawn. A realeffort has been made to make this yearbook unique.Preserved between its covers is the history of a yearat Myers School. In addition to the pictures of allthe students- the pictures of the activities rangingfrom initiation to graduation are a storehouse ofmemories. The publishing of this yearbook istruly a worthwhile venture.I would like to share with all the readers of thisYearbook a definition of education. Education is nota thing or a place; it is a process. Education is theprocess of producing a person who is publicly usefuland privately happy. Education is not to be confusedwith attendance at school. Attendance may benecessary but it does not guarantee an education.Education is the spark of insight into a problem, it isthe revealing of relationships between events, it isthe appreciation of the struggle of minds that hasprovided us with the tremendous fund of knowledgethat is now ours. Education is listening to the spokenword and reading the written word; it is taking theideas of others, analyzing and sifting them, andcoming up with a conclusion or generalization ofone's own.Education is learning to accept responsibility forone's own actions whether that action be lack ofpreparation for an exam, or whether that action behookey playing-both have consequences that are theresponsibility of the doer.Education is probing the internal organs of apreserved frog, it is developing a skill of the basketballfloor, it is polishing and refining an essay, it ismaking a painting come to life, it is struggling witha complex problem. Thus, education is a many faceted diamond, witheach facet requiring the effort of the learner topolish it to brilliance. Education is obtained bythose who work for it.I believe that the facilities, program and staffat Myers school are among the best to be found inAlberta. May I urge all who have the opportunity totake full advantage of the education availablehere.James L. George( Principal )into TomorrowsMrs. M. Allen-P. E.Mr. R. Anderson-Sc. , MathMr. A. T.Westlake districts clasped the eager ones tightly bythe hand as the little rascals skipped along, anticipatingthe grand adventure of school. With scrubbedfaces and toothless smiles, we took the first steptoward the future which so hopefully belonged to us.It was a new and very different world. We enteredtimidly, because it was a world of faces we did notknow. It was our secret fear that the teacher wouldexpect us to read and write on the first day. We hadshy fears of having to go to the bathroom and notwanting to ask.But after the first week, school was a place oflaughter, scuffling feet, whispers, and old friends.Listening intently, we ventured through the magicdoors of storylands. Then joy burst upon us as webegan to understand, following directions, andthinking for ourselves. We rested our little heads onour desks and peeked, squirmed, and suppressed ourgiggles, for the minutes of rest seemed so endless.During elementary school, we blessed the reliefof recess as we ran, jumped, and shouted after beingsubdued for over an hour. We remember the refreshingcoolness of the drinking fountain water; the goodsmell of fresh air; and the freedom in games ofbaseball. We learned to accept criticism when wedid something wrong. In 1962, we, of different schools met on acommon stamping ground in Junior High. We weretogether--our country cousins of Kinniburgh, thesophisticated ones of Central, the intellectuals ofDr. Hamman, and the delinquents of L. T. Westlakewho played a mean game of football, with the girlsas the star quarterbacks. We were all enthusiastic, typical twelve yearolds; bursting with energy, often noisy, very talkative, and almost immune to discipline. The hallswere our domain. Our lockers were everybody’slockers; our books belonged to anyone, and we werealways in a mad scramble to get to class on time.I'm sure we all remember waving our green slipsfrantically as we brazenly entered the classroom lateagain. Detentions became an extracurricular activitywhere we met our pals at noon hour. Without a doubt,we were little monsters in Junior High.In Autumn, 1965, our happy, carefree schooldaysresumed. Barnwell cummuters became partof our happy crowd of teeny boppers.During our high school days, we became moreserious as we realized our school demanded the priceof discipline, hard work, and patience.Tonight, we fully appreciate to be alive insuch an age.To Live to it!To Give to it!ValedictoryBruce Conrad"All who have meditated in the art of governing mankind have been convincedthat the fate of empires depends on the education of youth. ”Those were the words of the ancient philosopher, Aristotle, commentingon the vital role of education in his time. In our time, the need for educationis much greater. Our happiness, economic success, and well-being in thefuture depend on the extent of your education. Our technology today is expanding more rapidly than it has ever donebefore in the history of man. Many new books, especially those on scientificsubjects, become out-dated within five to ten years from the time they arepublished. The use of automation is increasing. Computers speed up the handlingof business; run all sorts of establishments from airports to libraries; andare an indispensible aid to scientific research. They are also essential tonational defence. The heart of the NORAD defence system is a giant computerwhich keeps tab on hundreds of flying objects simultaneously and warns ofenemy attack. These remarkable devices are the products of the well-trainedminds of the past. But many people are needed now, and many more will beneeded in the future, just to keep our defense systems up to date. It is indeedtrue that the fate of impires depends on the education of the youth. We graduands have, for the past twelve years, been learning the factswhich will enable us to take our place in the future. We have not been alonein this effort. Many teachers have laboured to give us the knowledge of pastcenturies. Facts which have been accumulating for hundreds of years are nowour personal possessions thanks to their efforts. To our parents we also extendour personal gratitude. They have given us the rather firm encouragement thatwe have needed at times. Yes, our thanks go to all those who have so painstakinglyprepared us for success in the future; a future full of promise. We will be sorry to leave these familiar hallways and classrooms. Theyhave been the scene of so many happy moments, and the backdrop for somany distressing problems. They will remain in our memories forever. Our high school preparation is now complete; we are ready to go ourseparate ways and face the great challenges that lie ahead. May we forge forwardfearlessly and make our lives as successful and enjoyable as our highschool days have been. The future and all it holds is waiting.Ambition: Nurses'Aidecial TeacherCONNIE ANDERSONBiz-Ed Board ofDirectorsERICA ANTONYearbookBiz-Ed ( Sec. )Ambition: StenographerBOB APPLETON CORALIE ARNETTI. M. The orange shirt reminds us that every childmatters and no child is forgotten.Olssmv\Ne will not soon forget the incrediblepresentation from Eva Olson. Her story of survivalthrough the horrors of the Holocaust wasspellbinding and inspirational. Mrs. Olsen told herstory to the student body, recounting some of thehorrors of the atrocities carried out under thefascist rule in Germany, Austria, and Hungary. Herresilience shone through as she explained thestruggles of being seen as less than human. Sheencouraged to consider her story as a messageagainst the power of bullies in the world aroundus and proclamation of truth about everyone'sintrinsic self-worth. A woman well into her 90s, Evaspoke and showed photos of her experiencewhich put into perspective the relative comfortand freedom that we all live with today. To saythat Mrs. Olson's presentation was transformativewould be to underestimate its power in the life ofour student body. Our gratitude is extended toEva for this wonderful presentation.- Dale FriesenWelcome to W.R. Myers High 4School!! f\sW.R. Myers is a small high schoolwith a big heart. When things were going well I think we played as well asany team In the league, and probably should have finished higher than we did. Although wehad a group of amazing and talented players, we did not necessarily have the right amount ofposition players. This, along with numerous injuries, resulted in girls playing out of the position, that they had been playing for years before, for most of the season. The coaches would like to thankour Seniors for all their years of hardwork and dedication towards Rebel Basketball, and we arelooking forward to next year as we return half of the team. Go Rebels!V arsity' ^^J2018 ZONE & PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSWhat a season the Girls put together, we had some very close league games throughout theseason. Those crazy intense games proved to be just what we needed going into zones andeventually provincials. In the Zone Championship game, we were behind the whole way butwe never felt we were out of it. When the final buzzer rang we found ourselves all tied up andready to go into overtime where we dominated and were able to capture the Zone Banner. AtProvincials we put together some of our best games. We traded off a Rebel ClassicChampionship to earn our way into the Provincial Championship game. We again foundourselves behind most of the game but all those close games throughout the season gave usthe composure to keep playing hard, Midway through the 4th quarter we finally got the leadand we were able to hold that lead until the final buzzer and win the Provincial Banner! —^5Roster:Sophie Simek(#4), Reagan Bailey(#5), DaniWright(#6), Langley Moser(#7), Anika Steed(#8),Alex Haller(#9), Kitawna Sparks(#10), AustenRobbins(#l 1), Lauren Steed(#12)r#«!t MJfinishing 3rd in a competitive 11 team league with aleague record of 8 wins, 2 losses, and an overall record of 14 wins and 8 losses.
