Common Thermostat Issues
There are several things that can go wrong with a thermostat. For instance, you may notice the reset button will trip, leaving the thermostat in a permanently “ON” or “OFF” position. This is more than likely an electrical issue, so leave this one to the professionals. In fact, more often than not, this is a sign that you need to replace your thermostat entirely.

Resetting a Digital Thermostat
If the issue is not with the furnace itself, then it may be with your digital thermostat. There are three main ways you can do this.
With some thermostats, if you put the batteries in backward for five seconds, this can reset the unit. (Yes, really!)
You can also force it to reset by getting your circuit breaker involved. Turn your thermostat “off”, then flip the related circuit breaker “off”. Wait 30 seconds, then turn the breaker back “on,” then the thermostat. Set the thermostat to hot or cold, whichever you prefer, and your desired temperature. This should effectively reset it.
Another method you can try is the paper clip method. Some thermostats have a recessed reset button. You can use a paper clip to push it down. Hold it for five seconds, then release it.
Resetting Your Furnace
If you don’t have heat and you’ve already tried fixing your thermostat, the problem may not actually be the thermostat at all. First, you’ll want to check whether you have enough oil or gas to run the furnace. From there, you can try resetting the furnace to see if that does the trick.
The first thing you’ll need to do to reset your furnace is to turn down the thermostat to its lowest setting. Then, kill the power to the furnace by way of flipping the circuit breaker or pulling the fuse.
If you have a gas furnace, turn off the main gas supply but leave the pilot gas supply light on. Then, light a match and hold it to the opening of the pilot light jet flame to re-ignite the pilot light.
Your next move, for either furnace, is to turn the power back on. If you have a gas furnace, you’ll then want to turn to the main gas supply back on.
Press and hold the furnace’s reset button for 30 seconds, then raise the temperature on your thermostat. This should effectively reset everything and kick the heat back on.
