Jacob Trouba has called on the Barstool Sports hockey podcast "Spittin' Chiclets" to "do better" after its producer, Pasha Eshghi, brought up Trouba's wife, Kelly, and her profession while criticizing the New York Rangers captain. In a clip from episode 503 of the podcast that went viral on social media, Eshghi also called into question the charity work the couple do through the Trouba Creative Expression Arts Program.

Trouba, 30, has been married to Kelly, 33, since the summer of 2020, but they were in a relationship for several years before that. They met in 2012 while students at the University of Michigan and got engaged in 2018.

Kelly was a neuroscience major and earned a master's degree after graduation. In the year between their engagement and marriage, Trouba told the "Winnipeg Sun" after being traded to the Rangers from the Winnipeg Jets, "her career is as important as my career."

Trouba had not publicly mentioned her career previously to not "throw her in the fire where everybody goes after her," he told "ESPN" in 2019. That is perhaps why the Rangers captain took issue with Eshghi's comments.

The podcast's producer took exception to Trouba winning the league's Mark Messier Leadership Award this season. "One of the reasons in the article that he won it. It says: 'Trouba and his wife founded the Trouba Creative Expression Arts Program, which offers art services to adults with epilepsy and seizures,” Eshghi said.

Kelly has epilepsy and has a neurologist and medication to help her seizures. Eshghi continued: “Well, you want to know the irony of that situation?

"Trouba’s wife is a neuroscience major. Maybe Jacob should go home and get a lesson from his wife about the dangers of concussions that can lead to epilepsy and seizures before he goes around concussing guys on a daily basis."

Kelly is now a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine after graduating medical school and resides at Lenox Hill Hospital in the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell in New York City. Eshghi also called Trouba, "the dirtiest player in the league."

"It's insane the irony. It's like, OK, you want to embrace the scumbag role? Fine.

"But the fact that they're parading him around as some sort of humanitarian's a joke. Like, his agent or PR person should get a major raise for that."

In reply to a post on X, formerly Twitter, of the clip, which Eshghi captioned: "Don't shoot the messenger," Trouba first shared a statement. "Suicide rates have doubled in the past 20 years in U.S. college athletes - @usnews."

"11 days ago, a @PGATOUR golfer (Grayson Murray) tragically took his own life after a mental health battle and people asked how that was possible. We must do better than this @spittinchiclets @peshghi @ryanwhitney6."

In a follow-up post, Trouba added: "Painting is my outlet. For the next 30 days, proceeds from 24” print sales will be donated to @AthletesForHope."
