In recent years, health system boards have been undergoing a quiet revolution. In a sample survey of 18 non-profit health system boards, several trends indicate boards’ efforts to modernize their composition and the way they convene:① Board Size: The average health system board has shrunk from 25 members in 2015 to 16 in 2023, making meetings more manageable and efficient.② Expertise on Board: 94% of health systems now have a physician on their board, with 56% also including a nurse. Boards are actively recruiting members with backgrounds in technology and consumer experience to drive strategic innovation.③ Diversity: The share of board seats held by women increased from 24% in 2014 to 37% in 2022, roughly matching the 35% average for S&P 500 companies. This evolution in board governance ensures that health systems are better equipped to meet the major challenges facing them today. Boards are having to make major decisions about the future of the nonprofit system, the major question is: do they have the right people on them?Interested in learning more? Review these trends and more in the Health Equity Alliance's comprehensive report with the American Hospital Association on board composition. Full report: https://lnkd.in/ek8asdSH
